I have arrived!

I made it safe and sound to my host family's house in Besançon! The flight wasn't too bad (I actually slept some), and I sat next to a freelance reporter for TV1, France's largest tv station. When I was awake, Claude told me all about his work in Los Angeles, where he routinely interviews movie stars! His favs to work with are Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones, who is apparently fluent in French. Très cool!

It was nice to see the countryside during the train ride to Besançon; it looks a look like Iowa around here, only older. Besançon actually reminds me of Dubuque, IA: rolling hills, a river, narrow/steep streets. I think I'm going to like it here. It already feels and looks like spring!

My family seems really nice, the twin 6 year old girls are so cute! I live on the third(top) floor of their house, with a bedroom, bathroom, and closet. Very spacious, actually.

Tomorrow I will explore the city by bus and visit my school. Looking forward to it!

Oh! You have the most amazing experiences. How did you just strike up this conversation with the frenchman sitting next to you?? Was he cute?? lol ;) Anyway the town sounds beautifully french yet comfortingly iowan. Thats cool that you have the whole third floor to yourself. Hopefully you'll get to stay there for cheap after this month!! I met Kate O'brien. She said she knew you. We have some teaching classes together. She said it is cheaper for you to go there than it was for us to go to Angers. I didnt realize that. Anyway I want to hear all about your convos with the twins! How has your french been so far?? Do they think you are amazingly fluent? Did you talk to them much??
Anyway just so you know I will be stalking you and obsessively checking your blog so that I may live vicariously through you.

Amanda, I just looked through several of your China photo slideshows for the first time. Gorgeous. You looked like you were having a blast. I am so happy you've found opportunities to travel. What kind of camera were you using? The color and crispnes in the pix is excellent. Spring? You wrote of spring. I am sure someone from home has already told you it has been extremely cold, windy and snowy here the last day or so. Therefore, be extra happy you are en France and not en Iowa right now. Today (1/17) is my mom's 84th birthday, so I am going to leave work soon and give her a call. I just wanted to test out the blog. Let's see if I can actually post this note. Enjoy the frambroise and chocolat everything there. Tam

Merci, Tam! I have a Canon compact digital camera, and I really like it. It is small and pretty easy to use. Stay warm and dites Bon Anniversaire à ta mère! You are well on your way to becoming a full fledged member of the technology community!

Amanda,

What fun to read your blog. I enjoy your inclusiion of French words and phrases. Had breakfast today with Mary and your parents, then worked from 11 til 3:30. One of the aides who had worked in Pediatrics for 40, yes, 40 years died unexpectedly Friday. So things are kind of unsettled there. We saw "The Bucket List" Friday night and both enjoyed it and couldn't help but wonder how you would have reviewed it. Good luck on the test. Love and hugs, dw
